The Origins of Legacy Trails

Legacy Trails is owned and operated by Central Iowa resident, Pete Englund. Pete has been performing crew-based trail work across 12 different states for 18 years as an integral leader in the Iowa Department of Natural Resource’s AmeriCorps training construction program. When that program was ended by the Iowa DNR, Legacy Trails was born.

Pete cut his teeth doing trail work on a portage crew in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness while in college. Since then he has set tool to trail on four National Scenic Trails throughout. As a result, Pete’s work-experience soon turned into a passion for life on the trail and training the people work hard to construct and maintain those trails.

Pete is a nine-time alum of the Student Conservation program and has led high school students to retirees in performing all facets of trail work. He still trains crew leaders for the organization and especially enjoys teaching trail layout and design. He currently performs maintenance for the Iowa DOT.
